DTT in Ireland
August 15, 2009
Digital Terrestrial Television or DTT, is a digital broadcast of TV channels within Ireland. It utilises existing TV masts and broadcast in digital quality. RTE NL ( RTE Transmission Network Limited ) started testing a digital terrestrial broadcast in 1998, continued in 2001 and 2004. Throughout 2007 and 2008 RTE NL ran a closed test in Dublin and in the North East. Since this time RTE NL have started broadcasting on a test basis on most of its main transmitters. While the broadcast is still on a test phase all 4 Irish terrestrial channels are available. Please note that RTE NL periodically switch these broadcasts to a test signal without notice and for unspecified lenghts of time.

What will be available?
The 4 Irish terrestrial channels, RTE 1, RTE 2, TV3, TG4, are currently being broadcast from most of the major transmitters in Ireland, through DTT. RTE have been awarded space to broadcast existing public service channels and there are proposals in place to broadcast an Oireachtas Channel, an Irish Film Channel and a new RTE 3.
In 2008 the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland ( BCI ) awarded Boxer TV Ireland a contract to broadcast subscription based channels within Ireland, however Boxer and the BCI failed to finalise the contract and in April 2009 Boxer withdrew from the contract. Since then the contract has been awarded to the One Vision (DTT) Consortium, made up of TV3 Group, Arqiva, Eircom and Setanta.
Within their proposal (PDF) One Vision have outlined their channel line up and costing, with packages starting at €9.99 per month they will also off sports and movies as premium add ons.
How do I receive DTT broadcasts?
Currently you can receive RTE 1, RTE 2, TV3 and TG4 on DTT. You will need a MPEG4 Digital Terrestrial Receiver and an aerial capable of receiving UHF Channel 45 ( Mount Leinster, Transmitter ). Currently the broadcast is subject to regular test periods, but does offer high quality picture and sound.
